According to Homer (Odyssey iv:412), Mennelaus was becalmed on his journey home from the Trojan War. He wanted to propitiate the gods and return safely home. He was told that he should capture Proteus and force him to reveal the answer.
Although Proteus transformed to a lion, a serpent, a leopard, water and also a tree, Mennelaus then succeeded in holding him as he emerged from the sea to sleep among the seals. Proteus was finally compelled to answer to him truthfully.
